CommentThis juvenile Australian Hobby was hunting dragonflies along the lake edge in Yanchep National Park. Once caught it took it back to back to a favourite, exposed perch to break up. This raptor also catches mice and smaller birds, inclusive of parrots, and as it is active even after dusk, it also takes bats. Sitting high on an exposed branch, often near water, it will search for movements that reveal prey, and when it spots something promising, it might bob its head up and down in excitement. It rarely goes to ground. Australian hobbies are found throughout Australia, preferring open spaces with some woodland around. The sexes are alike, but the female is the larger bird; juveniles have darker, more colour saturated plumage with lighter edges on the feathers and wide, rufous stripes on the breast. Breeding takes place from August to January, mostly in a ‘commandeered’ stick nest. Yanchep National Park; GPS. Status (2016) Least Concern
