CommentI chose this photo as I feel it demonstrates some key diagnostic characteristics of the sharp-tailed sandpiper - typically the rusty colored cap and prominent white eye-ring. It was particularly pleasing to photograph a bird which appeared to have recently arrived in Australia after it's long migratory flight and still had evidence of remnants of it's summer breeding plumage such as the rusty colored edges to it's back feathers and the coarse streaking on its breast. I was also intrigued by what might be fraying of the edges of some of the back feathers (could this be evidence of damage incurred from its long flight) and the change from broader feathers on the upper parts to more filament style feathers on the underparts.
