CommentStanding on the boardwalk on Penguin Island, I positioned myself so I could capture Greater Crested Terns flying in with morsels of prey, in order to feed their chicks waiting in the colony below on a flat spot in the landscape. Sometimes, the right chick could not be found in flight, and the adult tern would come in again for another try. This created plenty of opportunities for an ‘in flight tern shot’. This is one of the better ones, and because I stood up high on the boardwalk, I was just about eye level with the bird
EquipmentNikon D800 camera body, Nikkor AF-S 500mm f4G ED VR lens, Gitzo GT3543XLS Tripod, Dietmar Nill gimbal tripod head. 1/3200 sec; f9 Manual Exposure Mode; (‘floating’) ISO 450; Centre-weighted Metering; Focus Mode AF-C. Picture (colour) Control Standard. Opened and adjusted in Camera RAW, post-processed in Photoshop CC: catch-light enhanced, slightly cropped, re-sized and sharpened, then converted to Jpg. Further sharpened and noise controlled in Topaz Sharpen AI Pro. Checked against NEF/RAW file for colours and density. Finally putting the PSD file back over Adobe Camera Raw/CC 2019 as a 16-bits image, I made the following adjustments in the ‘Background Layer’: Contrast: +4; Highlights -22; Shadows +1; Whites -17; Blacks +3; Texture +16; Clarity +9; & Dehaze +3. Ultimately, in Adobe Photoshop CC 20119, I enhanced the bird’s eye, sharpened the entire body with the selective sharpening tool, downsized to requirements and saved this Jpg copy, checking the colours using ‘The Australian Bird Guide’
LocationPenguin Island; GPS, Western Australia
