Rainbow Lorikeet

Rainbow Lorikeet (Image ID 37012)
CommentThis photo of a rainbow lorikeet pair was chosen for the competition for its conveying of their closeness by framing through a space in the equally colourful early summer foliage of the plane tree avenue along the southern border of the Coburg Lake. The plane trees are a favourite nesting place for many lorikeets, with numerous convenient hollows available. Despite its closeness to a children's playground, the lorikeets seem unfazed by the human goings on below, and may be seen there year after year, chattering and screeching. Food is close at hand with large flowering gum trees in various parts of the Coburg Lake Reserve. Males and females are virtually indistinguishable for rainbow lorikeets but the pairs are known to be largely monogamous.
