Australian Wood Duck

Australian Wood Duck (Image ID 37011)
CommentAn Australian Wood Duck Pair, Coburg Lake Reserve, chosen for the competition for its framing and communication of the relationship between the male and female of these beautifully plumaged ducks, who mate for life. Female on left with characteristic two pale lines across face. Male on right with dark mane and darker brown head and upper neck. The pair were photographed on the north grassy bank of the Coburg Lake with their family of four downy ducklings close by. The image evokes both the relationship of the pair and mirrors the Yin-Yang female-male symbol. They are commonly found at Coburg Lake Reserve, especially on the north side grassy areas, although over the past year, they are facing increasing competition from a flock of some fifty Australian White Ibis that have made their home on an island in the lake.
