Star Finch

Star Finch (Image ID 36924)
CommentFollowing a very dry wet season this year in the Kimberley, it seemed much easier to observe a huge array of finches at the remaining waterholes. For the first time, I was able to observe and appreciate the subtleties of the sexual dimorphism of Star Finches. In this image, the male (lower bird) has a red mask that extends beyond the eye to the ear coverts and forehead and also onto the throat, while in the female (upper bird) the red mask includes the eyes but is otherwise not nearly as extensive.
