Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo

Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoo (Image ID 36818)
Resolution1595x1800
ID36818
CommentAdult male and adult female allopreening. The female had clambered around 2 meters along a branch to get close enough to the male for allopreening to occur. At times both birds were engaged in preening the other simultaneously. In long-lived, tightly-bonded pairs such as those of the Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo, allopreening serves to strengthen the relationship. This pair had one juvenile offspring which never ceased begging for food while I was observing and photographing the parent birds.Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos as a species appear to have benefited tremendously by the abundant food provided by Pinus radiata plantations.
Very low light and the dark plumage of the birds made capturing this image technically challenging.
