Comment‘Digging’: This is the third photo in a series of three depicting the posture adopted by male rainbow bee-eaters when excavating their nesting burrows. The legs are clearing the sand from beneath the body of the male. Note how the dropped wings assist in channelling the sand immediately behind the bird. This bird continued to move over a metre square area repeating this behaviour. After several minutes a female landed close to the male and after a minute or two the two birds flew off together. Whether this digging behaviour is part of selecting a suitable nesting site or to display a male's ‘fitness’ to females is unknown. About a week later an excavated burrow appeared at this location.
EquipmentNikon D850 + Nikkor 600 FL; tripod, transportable hide.
