CommentPacific Golden Plovers breed in the Alaskan tundra and Russian Arctic during the northern summer. Most birds we see in Australia during our summer are in non-breeding plumage. The bird in this image is part-way through the moult to breeding plumage while making its way north to the breeding grounds. The main feature of full breeding plumage is the immaculate black face, throat, breast and belly. During migration north, birds use many islands and atolls in the western Pacific as staging posts where they rest and feed before continuing on to the breeding grounds. This one was photographed hunting insects in long grass on Weno Island in the Federated States of Micronesia.
EquipmentCanon 5Ds + 400 mm f/4 DO II + 1.4x III extender, hand-held.
Manual, spot metering, AI Servo spot AF, f/5.6, 1/640 sec, ISO 400.
Processed using DPP4 and PSE14 with Neat Image plug-in.
