Northern Mallard

Northern Mallard (Image ID 35779)
Resolution1800x1013

CommentI entered this photo as there are a few things that intrigue me about it. Firstly, the male mallard is mating with a white bird, which to my eye looks like a White Mallard (size, bill shape and same curly tail feathers). Is there such a thing – or is it the result of Northern Mallards interbreeding with white domestic ducks? The second thing that intrigued me was the very rough handling the male bird gave to the female bird, forcing her head down as low as possible, often completely submerging it – yet they mated often and the female was certainly a willing participant. The third thing that intrigued me was how the very fine bristles in its bill look so much like teeth. I was pleased that the bird adopted a pose enabling me to capture the fine bristles.
