Brown Songlark

Brown Songlark (Image ID 35308)
CommentFor this competition, choosing and 'arranging' the wire was always going to be important.
In this image a break from barbed wire to plain wire, and the method used to tie off the link, shows at an intimate level the human hand at work. For this photograper it brought to mind making just such joins when working on farms.
The bird has chosen the precise join for a perch.
In terms of composition, the loose ends of the wire echo the lines of the neck while the plain wire echoes the lines of the bird's tail.
The bird is highly focused on something that is happening beyond the image. Its grip on the wire appears tenuous. The tension in the bird contrasts with the soothing arrangement of lines, colours and negative spaces.
