CommentThis is sub-species tephropleurus, a long-billed ssp endemic to Lord Howe Island. HANZAB estimates the population has been established on LHI for about 300,000 years. Some authorities consider it to be a distinct species. Adults have a much longer bill and longer tarsus than the nominate race (lateralis) from Tasmania. Adults also have a longer tail and the wing is rounded reflecting the sedentary nature of this ssp.
