CommentLarge-tailed Nightjars were found on the Portland Roads Road on several nights. They were easily identified in flight by the clearly visible white outer tail feathers. On closer inspection, as in this image, the coarse rictal bristles with pale base can be seen running from near the gape towards the eye. This individual is a juvenile distinguished by the tawny caste and rufous plumage.
EquipmentCanon 5Ds + 400 mm f/4 DO II + 1.4x III extender, hand-held, with car headlights for illumination.
Manual, spot metering, AI Servo spot AF, f/5.6, 1/50 sec, ISO 2000.
Processed using DPP4 and PSE14 with Neat Image plug-in.
