I know this is not a photography question but there are enough people here that maybe able to help out.

I had the following question from a new attendee of our monthly bird walk we lead for Birdlife SEQ.

"I am looking at improving my identification of birds through bird calls. Do you happen to know of any audio recordings that play automatically as audio tracks with the name of the species specified before the call? I want to be able to play it in the background at work or in the car etc to get familiarised with each call."

Has anyone ever heard of anything like this rather than the apps I am familiar with where you find the bird and then listen to the playback.

BOCA used to sell a set of 10 CDs, covering almost every Australian species, with a number of calls for each species. I have such a set sitting on a shelf in my office. No idea if it's still available from anywhere. I'll post more details tomorrow - office currently out-of-bounds while my wife does a Zoom meeting ;-)

I don't know of anything else meeting the requirements you gave.

I have a few CDs which I purchased many years ago.

The first is something called Australian Bird Call Series - Birds of the Greater Sydney region (5 CD set). This was recorded by someone called Fred Van Gressel and produced by Professional Wildlife Sounds, 64 Dorothy Avenue, Woy Woy NSW, pho 02 43431283. Date is 2002.

I also have three CDs by Helen Horton, sold by ABC Audio (around the year 2000). This is less 'scientific' than the above and not comprehensive at all.

Professional Wildlife Sounds still seems to exist and is run by Mr Gessel (www.professionalwildlifesounds.com.au). He seems to sell CDs from the website and has added some other areas to the Sydney/Hunter region.

The set I have is "A Field Guide to Australian Birdsong. Revised Edition 2001", compiled and edited by Howard Plowright. A quick google search suggests that it's no longer available, but you might find a second-hand set on ebay, gumtree, ...
