CommentShy/White-capped Albatross
Scientific Name = Thalassarche cauta
Wingspan = 2.0 - 2.6m
Conservation Status = Vulnerable

This bird is technically a White-capped Albatross as there is no yellow at the base of the bill. However, I have accepted both Shy and White-capped as correct answers as both Pizzey & Knight and The Australian Bird Guide group these species.

The Salvin’s Albatross is distinguishable from the Shy by the bill. The bill is an olive-ish shade with a stripe on the upper mandible ranging from white to yellow in colour. It also has a dark spot at the end of the bill. The Grey-headed Albatross has a yellow stripe on the upper mandible and part of the lower with a pink tip. Some identifying features for the Shy are:

- Grey face wash, giving a white cap and cheeks
- Grey mantle
- Black ‘notch’ at base of wings
- Yellow bill tip
- Thin black eyebrow
- Thin black underwing margins
