The Southern Royal Albatross (SRA) and the Northern Royal Albatross (NRA) can be hard to distinguish, but there are a few differences. SRAs are slightly larger than NRAs. NRAs have totally black upperwings and SRAs do not. This image is of an SRA starting to develop white on the upperwings. It is an immature bird due to the terminal band on the tail. SRAs also have a white leading edge, NRAs do not. Some other identifying features are:

- Blackish cutting edge on upper mandible
- Pink bill, less pink than Wandering
