CommentThe ACT has a very limited number of locations where White-fronted Chats may be found. One such location is the Giant Sequoia section in the Arboretum. While this species is under pressure, the Arboretum Chats appear to be thriving with 17 individuals being counted on this date. The habitat is weird! The Sequoia are young, dense plants which serve as good nesting sites. The rough grass between the planting provides food - mainly caterpillars. The bare patches under the Sequoia are also a preferred landing site.
This male appears to be in transition plumage. Note that there are several black patches growing on the crown and nape. It still had a buff fringe on the flank which will turn into a brilliant white in full male adult plumage.
This bird is looking up at another Chat, higher in the tree.
I am including this image not so much for its merit than for its plumage variation.
EquipmentThis image is one in a series where I have experimented with aiming to achieve 100% of the bird covered by the depth of field. I begin by manually setting the f stop to get depth of field covering the whole bird. I then aim to get the shutter speed to 1,000th of a second or higher. I set the ISO to achieve the first two outcomes but try for no higher than 2,000. I may move closer or further from the bird as the fourth controllable variable. So far, I am pleased with the markedly lower proportion in instant deletes when I review the day's image captures.
