This is not my best shot ever but I do like it. It was suggested to me that the shot is a little dark so I have tried to improve on this version by adjusting the overall lighting, adjusting the lighting of just the bird and adjusting the lighting of the tail section. In all cases the adjusted section of the shot to become a little noisy.
I'm using DPP4 and PSE14.

Processed with DPP4, PSE14 with Neat Image v8 plugin.

Glenn Pure	2017-09-29 09:24:24	Stephen, sorry for the delay in responding but I've been away and it seems no one else is able to help here? The techniques you are using to globally and selectively adjust lighting are the way to go to get the best results. For your lighting adjustments, I assume you know that you can also use the 'lighten shadows feature of PSE (and DPP) as well as overall adjustments to brightness. Also, I don't know if you have adjusted the black and white points in DPP prior to exporting the file to PSE. This may also help. Noise will always become more apparent once an image or part of one had been lightened. Neat Image should be able to control this effectively. On this image, you have good areas where auto-profiling of noise levels can be made by Neat Image. It's then a matter of carefully adjusting the overall amount of NR applied and perhaps turning on some Sharpening in Neat Image to remove most of the noise while retaining detail. So I suspect you may need to have more of a play with Neat Image if you aren't happy with the result. Noise reduction should also be applied selectively: more the to background and less to you bird. For this shot, the noise levels look fairly good but I think it does look a little dark too. You could selectively lighten the bird some more and hopefully achieve your goal. In short, you are on the right track with your approach. It's just a matter of persisting, I think.

I do routinely adjust the the exposure in DPP before exporting and try and get the black and white points right - but I suspect that is one area I did not fully explore when I reworked the shot. In the updated version I have increased the overall exposure in DPP by a couple of clicks - then increased a noise reduction on the bird a little.
