CommentThere are three Gallinago species in Australia. Strictly speaking we should have the bird in hand and be checking out the tail feathers when making a determination. In practice most observers tick Latham's Snipe for any bird recorded in southern Australia. Observers in northern Australia need to be much more circumspect because they might be missing a Pin-tailed or a Swinhoe's Snipe. There is no particular reason to think that the latter species are not present from time to time in Southern Australia.
