CommentPrions are by far the most challenging birds to photograph and ID on the Southern Ocean. They are small, fast and are pale-blue against a blue sea. There are about 8 spp with often only minute variations between them and in some cases absolute identification can only be made by in-hand examination.
Case-in-point is that this image is most likely of a Fairy Prion with the broad black tail band, the diffuse grey neck and generally white flanks. However, they can be very difficult to differentiate from a Fulmar Prion.
