CommentThis beautiful bird arrived out of nowhere at a tiny waterhole near Wyndham where I was taking photos of finches. Its arrival saw a mass exodus of little birds and I thought to myself “That’s it for photos here today”. However, within a few minutes the small birds had returned – keeping an eye on the kite they went about their business. Then I realised that they were aware that the grounded kite posed little risk to them as they could easily and speedily find cover in nearby bushes – while the kite needed time and space to pick up speed to be of any danger. With this knowledge that they could easily out-manoeuvre the large bird over a short but adequate distance they came quite close at times. I was pleased that under my bird hide I could get some close up photos showing good detail of the kite’s face. The kite had dark streaking over its head indicating it is a juvenile.
