Comment:From hatching to fledging takes about 47 days. This chick's nest was found well after the chick had hatched and there was no way of accurately estimating when it would fledge. When the banding team arrived on 2 September the chick was gone and could not be found. Early yesterday morning I found the mother and chick feeding about 200 m from the nest site. The image shows a healthy chick about 3-4 weeks after fledging. At this age it is nearly as big as its mother and is starting to grow tail feathers. The chick will stay close to the mother for at least 3 months and may still be begging for food a year later. The rufous throat patch is an unreliable indication that it might be a male.
