CommentIf you have seen this species in Australian waters you probably wondered why it was called 'white-chinned' because it generally has such a small white chin that it is indistinguishable from the base of the white lower mandible. Most birds in our region are from a race that breed on NZ sub-Antarctic islands and have little or no white plumage on the chin while the nominate race, shown in this image, breeds on Indian Ocean sub-Antarctic islands and usually has a prominent white chin.
