Comment:The Macquarie Island Station is a permanent Australian subantarctic research base on Macquarie Island, commonly called Macca,[2] situated in the Southern Ocean and located approximately halfway between mainland Australia and Antarctica, managed by the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD). The station lies at the base of Wireless Hill, between two bays on the isthmus at the northern end of the island.
The island and its surrounding waters are administered as a nature reserve by the Tasmanian Government Parks and Wildlife Service. In 1997 the island was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 as a site of major geoconservation significance, being the only place on earth where rocks from the earth’s mantle are actively exposed above sea-level. Photo shows the various parts of the station including no-go areas such as the magnetic recording area. On my visit in on 23 January 2017, the group from Heritage Expeditions (including TAS Park Rangers) walked along the western mixed course sand and shingle beach, with good viewings of Gentoo Penguins (this season, 20 chicks at the colony we passed), the colony of Macquarie Island Cormorants and were lucky not to be bombarded by pavlova from Skuas as they flew above our heads against the wind. One can see a view of the station, surroundings areas of the isthmus, the location where Light-mantled Sooty Albatross breed and of rejuvenating, lush vegetation, amongst which elephant seals, some 400-500kg, were grunting and snorting in their wallows. Hidden behind the rocks on the RHS is Garden Cove where the zodiac landed.
