Hi Guys,
With reference to the current 'Feeding' competition, I, personally, don't believe that the act of exchanging a gift during the act of mating to be an act of 'feeding' and I would be interested in other member's opinions. . .
Please have your say?
Bruce

I'm happy to leave it to the competition coordinator to decide. I take your point Bruce but on balance, I think a food gift offered during courtship is still feeding as I'm sure the gift will be eaten even if the process also involves a courtship ritual.

We competition coordinators/moderators haven't had to deal with that particular problem - which we didn't even consider when setting the theme - so far. I think we'd probably decide that the food involved would be eaten eventually, even if it did take a while as part of a courtship ritual, and so that would qualify the image as acceptable.

Since no-one bothered to address the original author, I won't bother addressing either of the responders either. . .

Without trying to create a controversy, I personally believe that the act of mating and the act of feeding are two separate and different activities. Just because a food item is given as a gift doesn't make it a feeding activity. What do you call it when a Great-crested Grebe presents its mate with some lake weed as a gift of mating?
If I attended a Catholic Church and took photos of the parishioners during the act of Sacrament of The Eucharist (Communion), would this be a picture of the act of feeding or worshipping?
I believe that this image is stretching the allowed boundaries and should be ruled out as inappropriate.

Bruce.

Hi Bruce, Glenn & Rob
A quick check in HANZAB Vol 3 page 730 fully describes the Fairy Tern behaviour being discussed here, listing it under the heading 'Courtship Feeding'. So I guess I would vote for accepting the image in the 'Feeding' competition.

Cheers
Trevor

Hi Trevor,
Thanks for your reply and if that's what is written in HANZAB then I will change my mind and accept the entry and put it down to the old adage "You learn something new every day."
Thanks again for your input.
