About 2-3 years back (about 2014 I think) I was walking out the front door to work and saw some unusual birds I hadn't seen previously, huddled beneath the footpath ramp. Several months later, they had grown quite a bit and taken on different plumage, and realised I was looking at juvenile brush turkeys.

Since then I have seen more and more of them - one morning last week I counted over 20 of them - this is in a major suburban area , only 10Ks from Sydney CBD. A friend also mentioned recently a male(?) turkey has taken up residence in their backyard, and has constructed a a huge nest/pile. They have lived in the same area for many years (20+ ?) and had never seen turkeys living so close to suburbia

Have any other members of BLP noticed this increase in Brush turkeys, and if so what parts of Sydney or other suburbs/cities?

They are common in parts of suburban Brisbane. I regularly get reports about the male turkey trying to build a mound in my mum's backyard in Indooroopilly and her battle to save her garden against the onslaught. I think the turkey is winning.

I think they have taken over Brisbane. I have heard several stories of Brisbane gardens being converted to giant mounds and the owners having no say in the conversion.
Several years ago I witnessed a Brush Turkey marching up a suburban footpath when I stayed with a cousin only 3km from the CBD.

Hey Bruce,

I was responding to Desmond's last line in his post.

"Have any other members of BLP noticed this increase in Brush turkeys, and if so what parts of Sydney or other suburbs/cities? "
