BirdLife Photography, as a National Special Interest Group, conducts most of its activities via this website.  It occasionally runs special events, such as the Digital Photography in the Bush long weekends, and the 2012 Gluepot campout which helped to set up the South Australian Photography Group.

If you are interested in participating in bird photography activities with other like-minded people, the following information on Photography Groups associated with BirdLife Australia branches may be useful.

Melbourne Photography Group

The Melbourne Photography Group conducts monthly photography outings or study nights each month except December.  Outings are usually on the third Saturday of the month at a site within an easy drive of Melbourne, and study nights are usually on the third Thursday.  If there is no national BirdLife Photography event, there is a long weekend outing once a year, to somewhere outside the group's normal range.

Membership

The BirdLife SQ Photography Branch has retained a steady membership since its inception in June 2011, and now (July 2014) has 48 members.

Newsletters

Since the passing of Tom Oliver in May 2013 newsletters have been co-edited by Diane Oliver and Richard Slaughter, and are sent to members on a quarterly basis.

Content of these newsletters is usually a mix of editorial comment and/or reports on recent bird photography activities or conferences. In addition members have been very active in submitting articles with information about their local favourite birding spots and they have shared their bird images with technical shooting data.

Some topics featured in recent newsletters are listed below:-

  • aspects of members bird walks around the world
  • a detailed report on the BirdLife Australia Special Interest Group Photography event in Ingham in October 2013
  • information on how and why to set up a personal bird photography website
  • a series of hands-on tutorials by David Jenkins which introduced the uses of layers for bird photography images.

The newsletters aim to present technical items while also broadening out to wider topics that cover the art, craft, purposes and presentation of bird photography.
